  Chen Style Tai Chi  Chuan

The routine of Chen style Tai Chi Chuan is famous for its distinctive rhythm and the magnificent postures . When practicing . it is important to emphasize on the “spiral twisting force “ and the basic requirements of relaxing agility and springing which are the special features of Chen style Tai Chi Chuan. The special movements base on the twisting of the torso . And the twisting force of the upper and lower limbs are connected through the twisting motion of the spine and the changes of folding in the chest and the abdomen in order to obtain a full twisting force all over the body.

For the upper limbs , you should twist the arm and wrist in co-ordinately like twisting a wet cloth dry . And for the lower limbs , you  twist the angles , the thighs and the calves in like driving in a screw . After releasing the force , it is imperative to maintain the continuity with the next movements without the severance in the force.

In order to master the correct technique of the force releasing , one should Bear in mind that it is “ from the extreme softness to the extreme  hardness”

At the beginning , one should emphasize on the extension of the body movements from the internal motion to the twisting motions and finally to the external releasing of the force . It is also important to train the force releasing of individual movement and flexibility exercises.

Basically the hand form of Chen Style Tai Chi are also different from other Tai Chi techniques. The main difference is that the palm is in the form of a Chinese tile and slightly retracted inward with the thumb and the little finger

Slightly folded and facing each other, and the tip of finger slightly pointed backward .  This is in agreement with its attacking features and a distinctive difference of Chen Style from others. So you should not confuse it and other style of Tai Chi Chuan .

The “ hook form “ Chen style is also different as it is a natural clutching of all the fingers . For the footwork , rubbing the moving foot with the stationary One before treading out is also a distinctive feature of Chen style .

Most of the time The first time learner missed the rubbing motion , it is usually related to the strength in the footwork and the understanding of the “emptiness and solidity “ besides the difference in the ground quality .

You should specially train the footwork techniques separately , and should strengthen the legs and feet through practicing standing  posture .

The Principles Of Chen Tai Chi

1/ Body aligned and vertical, top of the head floating, look far.

2/ Always breath naturally, exhale with the completion of each movement.

3/ Use as little muscle tension as possible but do not lose the correct form posture .

4/ Rigid and soft is what your opponent feels. If you follow his movement, there is no gap or bump in the contact, thus he feel you are not there, you are soft. On the other hand, when you got the right timing and configuration, you no longer follow him.

5/ Fast and slow. Fast refers to the instantaneous response to your opponent's move, and refer to your speed in reconfiguring yourself. Every movement is seen to be composed of succession of incremental frames.  Slow means patiently detail those instances that happened along the path of movement. It seems "slow" because of the richness or fullness of the movement.
